Life without water is unthinkable, and we are thinking a lot more about that today. For we all know very well that while we can survive for weeks without food, without water we will perish in a matter of days. The spread of drought as a result of global warming and the picture that is emerging today have made water a permanent item on the agenda. But water and ways of accessing it have always been a cause of vital concern.
Almost all settlements from the earliest times have been located near or at the edge of a source of water. Cities founded slightly farther from water devised various methods of bringing this vital, crystal-clear liquid to their homes. As one of the key elements of such waterways, aqueducts assumed the important function of supplying man's water needs from the dawn history right up to our own day. Lying across river valleys like an elegant necklace, these stone structures with their monumental architecture and ongoing vital function continue to bring life to Anatolia as they grace its landscape. |

When city-dwellers think of summer, they usually dream of a vacation at the seaside. And one inseparable part of any such dream is to walk barefoot on the sand at sunset and watch the waves wash away their footprints. For some, it doesn't matter if the beach is a long one. What's more important for them is gathering seashells, skipping stones, listening to the roar of the waves, gazing at the horizon and daydreaming, talking with the gulls, and sitting on the dock and dangling their feet in the water. But no matter what, for one and all the beach is the place where the land embraces the sea. And the soil of Turkey has produced a lot of beautiful beaches lapped by three different seas. |

 Trabzon port had been constitued by carving rocks around present port area in the year 117-119 BC. After port of Trabzon during Ottoman period, a port and berth and constuction initiated by Regional Comamnder Hasan Pasha at the site of old berth and construction completed at 1903 by governor Mazhar Pasha one of the most important 5 ports of Ottoman Empire. |

Book on Hattusha... A first in archaeology has been achieved with the completion of the reconstruction of the Hittite City Walls at Hattusha, an Historic National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Conducted by the German Archaeological Institute, the project has been published as a book, ‘A Mudbrick City Wall at Hattusha: Diary of a Reconstruction’, by Dr. Jürgen Seeher, former director of the Hattusha dig. The 232-page book, which gives comprehensive information on planning, organization and practice in the Hittite period, was published by Ege Yayınları.

Ankara festival marks 25th year! Synonymous with Ankara for 24 years, the International Ankara Music Festival is celebrating its silver anniversary this year.
The 25th International Ankara Music Festival, which will take place 4-26 April, is bringing residents of the capital a total of 23 events featuring performers from 18 countries, including Turkey. Among the festival chamber music offerings are Serbia’s Zagreb Quartet, Germany’s Leipzig Quartet, Austria’s Strauss Octette, Spain’s Pedro Navarro Trio, and the Poulain Trio accompanied by black-and-white scenes of Paris. Besides the traditional concert halls, the seven venues for this year’s Ankara Festival also include universities and other institutions. Accompanied by Swedish pianist Georg Oquist, Turkey’s world-renowned flute soloist, Şefika Kutluer, will give a recital, 6 April at the concert hall of the State Museum of Painting and Sculpture as part of the 25th International Ankara Music Festival. The program includes a number of works from the Romantic flute repertoire by composers from Reinecke and Gluck to Poulenc and César Franck. www.ankarafestival.com |
